Wow. Just wow. This was amazing. I had no idea what I was getting into here. I really thought this dish was going to be bland and turn out like one of those over-the-top ideas that just goes wrong. Every now and then though, the pieces come together just so to create a perfect storm [...]

I know this post could have been a bit more helpful if it came before Thanksgiving, but it’s not like most people were going to make duck last Thursday anyway. So let’s just move on, OK? Last year I smoked a turkey for the big day. It was such a success that I was basically [...]

Southern fried chicken can be easily ranked as one of the best foods I have ever eaten. Unfortunately, it can also be ranked as one of the worst. It’s not like there is a lack of fried chicken to try–after all, I do live in the South–but because the preparations and recipes all to often [...]

Pizza is easy, right. Yup. Even making the dough is pretty easy. But seriously, even my super-easy, no knead dough intimidates people. And you have to plan ahead. You have to mix it, let it rise, stretch it out, bake it. Honestly, sometimes I just want pizza that I don’t have to make from scratch. [...]

Something possessed me while I was walking around the produce section of my grocery store. I was just putting stuff into my shopping basket without paying attention. I didn’t really know what I wanted for dinner, but there was a good deal on arugula, so I picked that up. Mint was nearby, so that also [...]

Well, it’s fall now. Time to get out the stews, braises, hot soups, and a host of other comfort foods. I know it isn’t exactly cold outside yet (particularly in North Carolina), but it’s not too early to be thinking ahead. Besides, I like chili. And I like this one.
It’s a bit different than my [...]

A few weeks ago a made a tasty cheese souffle. It was such a smashing success that I knew I’d have to make it again. I’m rarely content making the exact same dish twice; I normally look for a small change that can be tweaked to subtle change the dish. As I’ve come into a [...]

On Tuesday I mentioned that I was working on a North African meal as the main course for a dinner party. Well the suspense is over, I’ll tell you what I did!! (Not that there was much suspense :) … and the title of this post gave it away anyway.) I made a tajine. A [...]

And I thought this was supposed to be difficult. It was my first time making this and it was quite easy. I’ve actually made it a couple of times now. Of course, a traditionally French dish has to be made using a recipe from a French chef. So I picked the most eccentric looking one. [...]

I’m always confused when I see the term “pie” or “tart” to represent something savory. I almost feel like I’m being tricked. I have that same problem with salads–aren’t they supposed to have leaves in them? (It’s not that big of a problem, it has never kept me from a good meal.)
But what else to [...]
